Each teacher has a Diocesan Core Curriculum Guide (as well as the Indiana Academic Standards) specific to the applicable grade level. Parents may contact their child’s teacher with questions regarding the curriculum.
Homework is an out-of-school assignment that contributes to the educational process of the student. Homework shall be viewed as an extension of class work and related to the objectives of the curriculum. (Legal 39)
Homework is assigned at the discretion of the teacher. Such assignments are age and grade-level appropriate. Parents having questions regarding homework may contact the child’s teacher.
The academic year consists of two semesters made up of four nine-week grading periods. Academic progress reports are sent to parents at the end of each quarter. A shorter, less detailed report is also sent to parents at mid-quarter.
Students participate in a variety of standardized testing at different stages of their educational experience. Test that are currently being utilized include the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS-Grades 2-8), the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP-Grades 3-8), Measure of Academic Progress (MAP-Grades 2-8), and the Assessment of Catholic Religious Education (ACRE – 5th and 8th Grade).
DAILY SCHEDULE (ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE PROCEDURES)
Student supervision begins at 7:30 a.m. with the first bell ringing at 7:45 a.m.
Anyone arriving after 7:55 a.m./Morning Prayer is considered tardy and must obtain a tardy slip from the school office. (Repeated tardies or the accumulation of tardies will result in either noon or after-school detention.) School is dismissed each day at 3:00 p.m. for kindergarten through grade four (4). Dismissal for grades five (5) through eight (8) is 3:10 p.m.
Students should enter and exit the building through the northwest doors near the school annex. Parents are asked to enter the back parking lot via the 12th Street entrance and pull into parking places. Traffic flow is one-way only. After dropping off or picking up your child, please exit onto Fletcher Street. If you choose to park on Fletcher Street, you are required to observe the parking signs of the city of Anderson. Extreme caution is necessary at all times as there are students walking to and from the building.
For early dismissal, a note to the school is required for a student to be dismissed prior to the regular scheduled dismissal time of 3:00 p.m. Parents first sign their child out at the school office; the child will then be called from the classroom.
From time to time the school will dismiss early for various programs and staff in-services. Parents will be notified of early dismissals and any such early dismissal will be noted on the school calendar.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES (Legal 15)
An educationally related activity is a non-classroom activity, such as a field trip or convocation that meets all of the following:
(1) Is consistent with and promotes the educational philosophy and goals of the school corporation and the state board,
(2) Facilitates the attainment of specific educational objectives,
(3) Is a part of the goals and objectives of an approved course or curriculum,
(4) Represents a unique educational opportunity,
(5) Has been approved in writing by the local superintendent or the superintendent’s designee,
(6) Cannot reasonably occur without interrupting the school day.
When a field trip it planned, a permission slip will be sent home to describe the activity and to obtain the required permission. Students are not permitted to leave school grounds without written permission from a parent or guardian.
GRADE ADVANCEMENT
The classroom teacher will determine student grade advancement and/or/placement. Achievement in daily work, including test scores and class participation, will be used in making this determination. Parents will be consulted as early as possible when retention is being considered. Teachers will also determine whether the student would benefit from placement in remedial programs by evaluating daily work, test scores, and class participation.
GRADING STANDARDS
Report cards are sent home on a nine-week schedule. The report card envelope is to be signed by the parent or legal guardian and returned to school. A progress report is also sent home at mid-quarter to make parents aware of the child’s standing before the end of the quarter. The letter grades A (94-100), B (85-93), C (75-84), D (70-74), and F (69 and below) will be used on the report card. Credit and non-credit grades are given for Music, Art, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Computer, and Health in grades 1 – 3.
HONOR ROLL
Honor Roll recognition is given to students in grades 4 – 8 in two categories: Straight A’s and A/B Honor Roll. Selection for the Honor Roll is given to those students who earn the required grades in academic classes. Graduation honors (Valedictorian and Salutatorian) for the 8th Graders will be based upon accumulated grades from the 4th Grade.
Before a student can be considered for Honor Roll he/she must have an “A” or “B” in both conduct and effort during that particular grading period. For the Year Honor Roll, a student must maintain and average of “A” or “B” in conduct and effort to be eligible.
MEDIA CENTER
St. Mary’s School is very fortunate to have a new media center that encompasses Internet connection, new computers, large video projection and a new atmosphere making technological learning more enjoyable. Each family will receive and be required to sign a copy of the Internet Usage Agreement from the office. Signing of the usage agreement is required before students will be allowed to use the media center and participate in computer usage.
